STUDENTS OF BATH INVESTMENT CLUB
The Students of Bath Investment Club (SOBIC) was established in 2010 as a private investment and finance society at the University of Bath.
The primary objective of SOBIC is to provide students with an education in finance beyond the scope of traditional university courses. The society offers members exclusive career events, mentorship to secure a position in finance, opportunities to publish research on market events or specific assets, and hosts collaborative stock pitch competitions.
SOBIC has a vast network of over 500 previous members who are now employed at top financial institutions. This network has enabled the society to initiate a "speaker series", where past SOBIC members and other professionals discuss their careers thus far.
The SOBIC committee lead portfolio managers who oversee teams of analysts. Each team regularly researches a financial product of their choice and presents it to the rest of the club for discussion.
Furthermore, SOBIC organizes events that bring together finance, economic, and investment societies from various regions in the United Kingdom and globally.

CAREER PROSPECTS
The members of SOBIC gain valuable practical experience in addition to their academic studies, which can be effectively utilized during interviews. As a selective private society, the small number of members ensures that each member is recognized, included, and appreciated, fostering stronger inter-member relationships.

SOBIC members have successfully secured positions across various finance domains, including sales, trading, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), debt capital markets (DCM)/equity capital markets (ECM), private equity, hedge funds, venture capital, consultancy, and accounting (see right).

Network
WITH INDUSTRY LEADERS
SOBIC organizes presentations, workshops, and social events featuring prominent finance, banking, and investment professionals. These events are aimed at educating members about the finance industry and providing insight into career progression opportunities.
SOBIC's portfolio managers, who have previously participated in summer internships or year-long industrial placements at top financial and non-financial corporations, provide mentorship to analysts. This guidance allows analysts to develop their skills and knowledge of industry practices.
The society's social events are held at great venues in Bath, providing members with an opportunity to engage with their peers and network with professionals in an informal setting.
Research
YOUR IDEAS
The club routinely publishes research articles covering a broad range of topics, including stocks, private equity, commodities, rates, and alternatives. These findings are disseminated to a large following on social media, providing an opportunity for wider industry engagement.

This initiative is particularly beneficial for individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge base for internship interviews. SOBIC firmly advocates for giving members the autonomy to research topics that interest them the most, thus fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity and personal development.

Invest
STOCK PITCH COMPETITIONS
SOBIC hosts biannual stock pitch competitions, where portfolio managers and their teams prepare pitch decks and present them to the committee and the wider club. The teams are subjected to rigorous questioning to assess the merits of their proposals.
Teams construct financial models (discounted cash flow/multiple methods) to provide robust and rational investment recommendations. These pitches improve communication skills and boost the confidence of participants when public speaking.

SOBIC maintains a portfolio of these stocks and tracks their performance over time. The teams with the best pitches and top-performing stocks receive recognition and a prize. This approach incentivizes members to strive for excellence and produces a healthy competitive environment.
